The “tree of life” – it’s not only Disney who gets this magical tree.
Even though this tree is featured in the famous “The Lion King” films, most of us don’t know much, or anything, about it. I certainly didn’t.
Now that’s going to change.
The bountiful Baobab (Adansonia) tree is revered for its significance. Native to Africa, it can provide shelter, clothing, food, and water for the animal and human inhabitants of the African savannah regions (Wikipedia).
Women even use these large, hollow trees to give birth in!
Of course I’d seen the tree featured in “‘The Lion King” years ago, but didn’t take much notice (did you?). I had no idea the Baobab had health benefits, or that I didn’t have to travel to Africa to get it!
I discovered Baobab powder in the Organicule Superfoods product line-up (my favorite Malaysian superfood brand, keep reading for your discount code).
Let’s be real, it doesn’t look like much on the branch. But we all know not to “judge a book by its cover.”
There’s much more than meets the eye with this fruit. Baobab fruit is the only fruit pulp in the world to naturally dry on the branch. The unique fruit pulp is harvested and sieved to reveal a natural pale powder that is abundant in nutrition.
“Baobab powder is renowned for its high vitamin C content, with one tablespoon (10g of baobab) providing just over half of the RDA of vitamin C for adults. That’s six times more than an orange… It also contributes minerals like potassium, calcium and magnesium as well as certain B vitamins, fiber and protein” (BBC).
As for flavor, think of a cross between lemon sorbet and an orange creamsicle, naturally in a powder form (yum!).
It’s a perfect flavor to add in a morning smoothie or banana nice cream (frozen, blended bananas) for a boost of nutrition. Baobab powder can also be enjoyed mixed with water, coconut water, or juice and drinking straight.
So there you have it – an easy way to eat from the “tree of life.” In your own kitchen!
